A Single-Board Computer Ditched Rockchip for Allwinner. That's Bigger Than It Sounds.

The new ArmSoM Sige6 picks an Allwinner chip with a real NPU over the usual silicon, a small move with bigger implications for the SBC pecking order.

In the small-board world, the choice of chip is practically a personality. So when ArmSoM's new Sige6 board broke ranks and picked an Allwinner A733 instead of the usual Rockchip part[1], it was a bigger deal than the spec sheet suggests.

The hardware is genuinely capable for the class. As detailed by CNX-Software, the A733 brings an octa-core processor, a 3-TOPS NPU for on-device AI, Wi-Fi 6, and support for up to 16 GB of fast memory. On paper it is the kind of board that can do light machine-vision work without phoning home to a server.

Part of the intrigue is the graphics, which lean on an Imagination GPU[3] rather than the incumbents, another sign that the supply chain behind these boards is quietly diversifying. For makers, more chip vendors competing for the same slot generally means better boards and fewer single points of failure.

The catch with any non-Rockchip board is always software: drivers, kernel support, and the long tail of community know-how that the popular chips accumulate over years. The Sige6's hardware writes a check the ecosystem still has to cash.

But every board that successfully bets on a different vendor makes the next one easier, and that is how a one-company corner of the market slowly turns into a real one. Competition at the silicon layer is the kind of boring progress that quietly improves everything downstream.
