Some of the worst ecological news arrives without a dramatic photograph. It looks like things getting slightly smaller. A new study covered by EurekAlert finds that tree swallows are shrinking and raising fewer young, and it traces the cause to the collapse of the insects they rely on to feed their chicks.

The mechanism is not subtle. Insects grow scarce during the short window when chicks need the most food. Those chicks fledge smaller and in poorer condition, and birds that begin life underfed tend to raise fewer young of their own. A shortfall two rungs down the food web becomes a bird population that is quietly winding down.

The part worth keeping is the researchers' larger claim, and it is one they make carefully. You cannot read climate impacts accurately without also counting biodiversity loss. We tend to file the two in separate conversations. In the field they are one process. Warming reshapes the insects, the insects reshape the birds, and the effect compounds in a way no temperature chart will capture on its own.

It is easy to grieve a species that vanishes and much harder to register a common one losing a gram or two each generation. Yet that slow shrinkage is what decline usually looks like. Not a collapse you can point to on a given day, but a downsizing, counted in grams and in the insects that are no longer there.
